Hai tổ chức Mạng lưới Nhân quyền Việt Nam (Vietnam Human Rights Network- VNHRN) và Người Bảo vệ Nhân quyền (Defend the Defenders- DTD) cho rằng các vụ bắt giữ liên quan đến cuốn sách "Chuyện với Thanh" gợi lại chiến dịch đàn áp Nhân Văn-Giai Phẩm và đe dọa quyền tự do ngôn luận.
VNHRN và DTD hôm nay đã kêu gọi Chính phủ Việt Nam ngay lập tức trả tự do cho tác giả Nguyễn Thành Nam cùng những người khác bị bắt giữ vì liên quan đến việc xuất bản cuốn sách của ông có tựa đề “Chuyện với Thanh - Lời kể mới về ánh sáng.” Hai tổ chức này mô tả sự việc là một phần trong chiến dịch đàn áp rộng hơn nhắm vào quyền tự do ngôn luận và tự do văn học tại Việt Nam.
Ông Nam, cựu giảng viên môn Tư tưởng Hồ Chí Minh tại trường đại học tư thục VinUniversity, đã bị bắt vào cuối tháng 6 và bị buộc tội theo Điều 117 của Bộ luật Hình sự Việt Nam với hành vi "tuyên truyền chống Nhà nước." Các cơ quan chức năng cáo buộc rằng cuốn sách của ông – vốn đề cập đến cuộc đời của cố Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh – đã "xuyên tạc lịch sử cũng như đường lối, chính sách của Đảng và Nhà nước" và "xúc phạm Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh, Đại tướng Võ Nguyên Giáp cùng các lãnh đạo khác của Đảng và Nhà nước."
Theo hai tổ chức này, vụ bắt giữ ông Nam diễn ra sau một chiến dịch đấu tố rầm rộ trên mạng, trong đó các bình luận viên có liên hệ với nhà nước cáo buộc ông bôi nhọ các nhà lãnh đạo cách mạng Việt Nam. Họ cho biết chiến dịch này được điều phối thông qua Ban Tuyên giáo và Dân vận Trung ương của Đảng Cộng sản, gợi lại sự tương đồng với chiến dịch đàn áp Nhân Văn-Giai Phẩm vào cuối thập niên 1950, thời điểm mà nhiều nhà văn, nhà thơ, nghệ sĩ và trí thức nổi tiếng của Việt Nam đã bị công khai lên án và trù dập vì bày tỏ những quan điểm độc lập.
Các tổ chức này cho biết cuộc đàn áp đã lan rộng ra ngoài phạm vi tác giả. Một số cá nhân tham gia vào các khâu biên tập, in ấn, xuất bản, phát hành và quảng bá cuốn sách được cho là đã bị bắt giữ hoặc đang bị điều tra với những cáo buộc tương tự. Ngoài ra, nhiều thành viên của Hội Nhà văn Việt Nam cũng được cho là đã phải đối mặt với các biện pháp kỷ luật do có liên quan đến ấn phẩm này.
"Việc truy tố hình sự một tác giả và những người tham gia xuất bản một tác phẩm văn học là hành động xâm phạm nghiêm trọng quyền tự do ngôn luận," hai tổ chức này nói trong tuyên bố chung. "Việc thảo luận một cách ôn hòa về lịch sử, các nhân vật công chúng và các tư tưởng chính trị tuyệt đối không được coi là hành vi phạm tội."
VNHRN và DTD cho rằng việc ông Nam viết và xuất bản cuốn “Chuyện với Thanh” là hành động thực thi quyền tự do ngôn luận một cách ôn hòa; đây là quyền được Hiến pháp Việt Nam (Điều 25) bảo đảm và được bảo vệ theo Công ước Quốc tế về các Quyền Dân sự và Chính trị (ICCPR) mà Việt Nam là một quốc gia thành viên. Họ lập luận rằng các vụ bắt giữ và chiến dịch lên án công khai đi ngược lại các nghĩa vụ của Việt Nam theo ICCPR cũng như các nguyên tắc của Tuyên ngôn Quốc tế về Nhân quyền.
Hai tổ chức này kêu gọi chính quyền Việt Nam ngay lập tức và vô điều kiện trả tự do cho ông Nguyễn Thành Nam cùng tất cả những người khác bị bắt giữ liên quan đến cuốn sách; hủy bỏ mọi cáo buộc hình sự đối với họ; chấm dứt các chiến dịch đe dọa công khai nhắm vào các nhà văn và nhà xuất bản; đồng thời đảm bảo rằng luật pháp và thực tiễn trong nước tuân thủ các cam kết quốc tế của Việt Nam về quyền con người.
Sự việc này một lần nữa thu hút sự chú ý vào việc Chính phủ Việt Nam tiếp tục sử dụng Điều 117 để truy tố các hành vi bày tỏ quan điểm một cách ôn hòa. Các tổ chức nhân quyền quốc tế đã nhiều lần chỉ trích điều luật có nội dung diễn giải mơ hồ và rộng rãi này, cho rằng nó thường xuyên bị sử dụng để bỏ tù các nhà báo, nhà văn, nhà hoạt động và những người chỉ trích chính phủ vì họ thực thi các quyền cơ bản của mình.
Giới thiệu về các tổ chức
Mạng lưới Nhân quyền Việt Nam (VNHRN) là một liên minh độc lập gồm các tổ chức và cá nhân hoạt động nhằm thúc đẩy và bảo vệ quyền con người tại Việt Nam.
Người Bảo vệ Nhân quyền (DTD) là một tổ chức độc lập chuyên theo dõi tình hình nhân quyền tại Việt Nam, đồng thời cung cấp thông tin và hỗ trợ cho các nhà bảo vệ nhân quyền, nhà báo, blogger và những cá nhân khác đang gặp rủi ro do các hoạt động ôn hòa của họ.

VIETNAM ACCUSED OF REVIVING CRACKDOWN ON WRITERS AFTER AUTHOR'S ARREST

Vietnam Human Rights Network and Defend the Defenders say arrests linked to Thanh's Story echo the historic Nhan Van–Giai Pham campaign and threaten freedom of expression.
WESTMINSTER, CA, August 05, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Vietnam Human Rights Network (VNHRN) and Defend the Defenders (DtD) today called on the Vietnamese government to immediately release author Nguyễn Thành Nam and others arrested in connection with the publication of his book Chuyện với Thanh - Lời kể mới về ánh sáng (Conversations with Thanh – A New Perspective on Light), describing the case as part of a broader crackdown on freedom of expression and literary freedom in Vietnam.
Mr. Nam, a former lecturer on Ho Chi Minh Thought at the private VinUniversity, was arrested in late June and charged under Article 117 of Vietnam's Penal Code with "conducting propaganda against the State." Authorities allege that his book, which concerns the life of late President Ho Chi Minh, "distorts history and the guidelines and policies of the Party and State" and "insults President Ho Chi Minh, General Vo Nguyen Giap, and other Party and State leaders."
According to the two organizations, Mr. Nam's arrest was preceded by an extensive online denunciation campaign in which state-affiliated commentators accused him of defaming Vietnam's revolutionary leaders. They said the campaign was coordinated through the Communist Party's Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee, drawing comparisons with the Nhan Van–Giai Pham campaign of the late 1950s, when many prominent Vietnamese writers, poets, artists, and intellectuals were publicly condemned and persecuted for expressing independent views.
The organizations said the crackdown has expanded beyond the author. Several individuals involved in editing, printing, publishing, distributing, and promoting the book have reportedly been detained or investigated under similar allegations. In addition, members of the Vietnam Writers' Association have reportedly faced disciplinary measures because of their association with the publication.
"The criminal prosecution of an author and those involved in publishing a literary work represents a serious assault on freedom of expression," the organizations said in a joint statement. "Peaceful discussion of history, public figures, and political ideas must never be treated as a criminal offense."
VNHRN and DtD said Mr. Nam's writing and publication of Chuyện với Thanh constitute the peaceful exercise of freedom of expression, a right guaranteed by Article 25 of Vietnam's Constitution and protected under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Vietnam is a state party. They argued that the arrests and public denunciation campaign are inconsistent with Vietnam's obligations under the ICCPR and with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The organizations urged the Vietnamese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Nguyễn Thành Nam and all others detained in connection with the book, drop all criminal charges against them, end public intimidation campaigns targeting writers and publishers, and ensure that domestic laws and practices comply with Vietnam's international human rights commitments.
The case has drawn renewed attention to the Vietnamese government's continued use of Article 117 to prosecute peaceful expression. International human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the broadly worded provision, arguing that it is routinely used to imprison journalists, writers, activists, and other government critics for exercising their fundamental rights.
